Once the kidnapper was charged with 50 counts of forcible sodomy on the boy, not to mention over a dozen more on another child, O'Reilly should have apologized.
The reason that O'Reilly isn't taking more heat is that so many Republicans have rushed to defend him. They spun, minimized the damage and, as usual, blamed those who quite appropriately called O'Reilly out for his heinous statement. In fact, this iVil thread just reached 469 posts: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/...
Attached is my most recent post no. 469 for anyone who cares to read it.
Today it's O'Reilly blaming a kidnapped child. Tomorrow it will be the Fox Republicans beating the war drum against Iran or some other state based on another trumped up "imminent" threat. Indeed, our DNI admitted just a few days ago that Iran, if left to its own devices, will not be able to develop nukes until 2015!
This has to stop. Let's keep the pressure on lying right-wing cheerleaders like O'Reilly and not let them slink away without a real apology when they make outrageous, disgraceful or unsupported statements.
Below is my response no. 469 on this iVillage board: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/...
I am so glad to see voices of reason starting to finally win the day on this thread. For hundreds and hundreds of posts, the right-wingers and the right-wingers in disguise like CL rushed to spin and minimize the fallout from Bill O'Reilly blaming a child kidnapping victim on whom looks as if unspeakable acts were performed again and again.
Bill's statement was just another incredibly mean, rude and downright disgraceful statement in the long string of them spewed from him and other right-wing mouthpieces like Coulter and Rush over the past decade of right-wing incivility.
Every time one of these statements is made someone quite appropriately calls them out. And every time the right-wing apologists swarm to spin, minimize and deflect. The Orwellian charges are always the same. The perpetrator is so misunderstood. In fact, the perpetrator is the victim. And those who dare to criticize are liars, distorters, unpatriotic . . . just like the victim.
I am sorry djie, but you and the right-wingers on the board are the ones distorting the posts of others. As I explain for you and the other right-wingers in gory detail below, what Bill said was wrong when he said it. And it was even worse when all the facts started to come out how this kid was so horribly abused in captivity and Bill still did not apologize for his statement. Your and the other right-wingers’ defense of Bill's statement makes it as if you have made the statements yourselves.
I. What Bill said was wrong when he said it.
Bill simply should not have accused an 11 year old who was kidnapped for 4 years of acted improperly. Yet that is exactly what he did when he said "I think, when it all comes down, what's gonna happen is, there was an element here that this kid liked about his circumstances" (notice I have used Bill's exact words so you can't play any more Clintonesque word parsing games).
Bill's statement was wrong on so many levels.
First, Bill didn't know whether in fact the boy decided not to walk away.
Second, he should not have cast aspersions on the boy's family by implying he wasn't properly trained to defend himself.
Third, Bill still would have been wrong even if the boy decided to stay and his family didn't teach him self-defense because, and please focus on this, 11 YEAR OLD KIDS ARE NOT TREATED LIKE RESPONSIBLE ADULTS, EITHER MORALLY OR UNDER THE LAW. Do you disagree with this? I really would like to know. I really would.
II. Bill's statement was made even worse when all the facts started to come out how this kid was so horribly abused in captivity and Bill still did not apologize for his statement.
Even shunting to the side the fact that what Bill said was just plain wrong from the get go which you seem not to understand, this still is not just a case of <Speaking too soon on a complicated issue/situation> as you say. You are simply wrong in minimizing and spinning this statement this way. Once Shawn's kidnapper was charged with over 60 counts of forcible sodomy, 50 of which were inflicted on Shawn himself, Bill should have realized that what he said was wrong. He should have realized that there are very strong indications his statement was horribly in error. And after all this time and appropriate criticism Bill should have realized by now that what he said initially was morally in error.
III. Your and the other right-wingers defense of Bill's statement is as if you have made the statements yourselves.
You can't defend Bill's without adopting it and being responsible. You can't have your cake and eat it too, as we have seen from Republicans so many times (think Swifties acting as surrogate hit-men for Bush or Karl Rove’s cheap shot politics on McCain in the 2000 Primary). If I am right that Bill's statement was as reprehensible as I believe it was, then, again if I am right, all of you really need to do some long hard soul searching about your values, your partisanship, and your views of reality. If I am right, you must try to sleep with this statement along with Bill and the other right-wing hatchet guys.
I am here on this board and posting this post because the right-wing and its dishonest Fox mouthpiece are really hurting America. It is tearing apart our moral fabric. It is distorting reality. It is inflicting needless suffering on so many. It is moving into the realm of acceptable what was and still should be unacceptable. And it is doing it through repeated lies and outrageous statements from which it refuses to back off and keeps pushing and pushing and pushing until America swallows them. I am here because it needs to stop, and if enough of us draw the line and do our parts maybe we can make a difference.
I am here because today it’s Bill O’Reilly’s nasty little evil statement, and tomorrow the Fox-right-wing machine will produce a much bigger lie or distortion. But the dawn is coming. America is starting to wake up to the right-wing BS. We are breaking the machine. Their latest awful distortion was that Iran poses an imminent threat of getting nukes. Thank God there were enough to slow the Bush Republicans down from the insanity of starting another needless war in the Middle East based on more Fox/Murdoch right-wing propaganda. And we now know that even our Director of National Intelligence estimates Iran will not get nukes until 2015 if left to their own devices. Maybe now we can focus on the real threat: Pakistan and its harboring of the real enemy we still have not defeated: Osama bin Ladin and al Qaeda.
END POST
Please join in the debate. And please let me know if you know of other boards with Republican posters where they don't screen out non-Republican voices!
